Director of Financial Health Research

The Company

Founded in 2005, Mission Measurement (MM) is the world leader in measuring and reporting outcomes for the social sector.  Our data, tools, and advisory services have helped thousands of nonprofits around the world to increase their impact. Many of the world’s leading corporations, governments, and foundations have also used our tools to invest in effective social programming. In 2014, we launched the Impact Genome Project® (IGP) – the industry’s largest evidence base of published and unpublished research across 11 social sector domains – to identify the specific program strategies that lead to positive social outcomes. This pioneering effort underpins MM’s unique suite of data products and tools that enable impact reporting, resource allocation, and systematic learning for the sector.

The Position

Mission Measurement is looking for an exceptional Director of Financial Health Research to join our Impact Genome Project team. This is a highly analytical and research-oriented position for those interested in working hands-on to help Financial Health practitioners achieve better outcomes. They will do this by using evidence to build common languages for describing outcomes, intervention components, and context commonly seen in Financial Health programs. This common language will lay the foundation for a range of applications including: meta-analyses that show not only what interventions works, but for whom and in which contexts; an infrastructure for collective impact; increasing nonprofit capacity for self-evaluation; democratizing access to research findings; and helping government and private funders make decisions based on outcomes data, not outputs or program activities. This individual will ensure that findings from the IGP are properly communicated to the field via both academic and popular articles. A qualified candidate will have strong research synthesis and writing skills, and experience with meta-analysis and program evaluation. Ultimately, the main goal of the Director is to identify and spread effective program practices, so the entire sector can achieve better outcomes.

Roles, Responsibilities, and Outputs

  • Leading research: Manage and deliver IGP research projects (meta-analyses, literature reviews, etc.) for understanding ‘what works’ in producing Financial Health outcomes, setting research timelines and delivering with excellence. Develop strategies and write proposals for securing research funding.
  • Thought Leadership: Serve as resident Financial Health expert within the IGP team, to clients, and with the broader sector, keeping apprised of sector trends and representing learnings from the IGP for the field. Present at conferences; participate in working groups with field leaders, and generate publications
  • Building external relationships: build relations with the academic and practitioner community to drive understanding and acceptance of the IGP data/research. Build and maintain advisory panels, practitioner councils, and collaborations that lead to benchmark data, adoption of our taxonomies, and use of the IGP data sets.
  • Enhancing IP: Support creation/refinement of IGP intellectual property (taxonomies, evidence tools, etc.) to accelerate the IGP’s ability to advance knowledge and program impact within the Financial Health sector.

  • PhD or equivalent in relevant field
  • Strong knowledge of research methods and program evaluation
  • At least 5 years of experience conducting primary or secondary research on Financial Health interventions or policies
  • Published work in peer-reviewed journals and other esteemed outlets
  • Track record of taking initiative and delivering in a dynamic and fast-paced professional environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines under minimal supervision; comfort with ambiguity
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data for technical and non-technical audiences
